84th Academy Awards: Adaptation Roundup

Four different book-to-film adaptations brought home Oscars tonight. The Descendants took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo brought home Best Film Editing. Octavia Spencer of The Help bagged the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. And finally Hugo cleaned up with Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects.

The most obvious missing adaptation is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 which missed on it’s three nominations (Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Makeup). Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction went to Hugo and Best Makeup went to The Iron Lady. This means that no Harry Potter film ever won an Academy Award.

Six of the nine nominees for Best Picture were book-to-film adaptations, but The Artist took home the big prize. In total eleven different adaptations were nominated for an Oscar this year.
