‘The Book Thief’ Gets a Director

March 1, 2012

Fox 2000 has set Brian Percival (Downton Abbey) to direct The Book Thief. The Marcus Zusak novel was adapted by Michael Petroni (Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader). Karen Rosenfelt (Twilight Saga) is producing, and a summer production start is being eyed. The synopsis for The Book Thief from Amazon:

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Wow! I can’t believe they’re actually doing this movie! I read it a long time ago and thought it was really interesting, but I can’t imagine how it’ll look on screen.

This is my favourite book of all time!!! And I’ve always said that I hope they never do a movie… It’s too beautiful, too amazing… I don’t see how it can possibly be captured on screen. I think the only way I’ll go see it is if it is getting stellar reviews by other fans.
