Will Moriarty Return in Season 3 of BBC ‘Sherlock’?

March 1, 2012

IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN SEASON 2 OF ‘SHERLOCK’ BEWARE, SPOILERS IN THIS ARTICLE: Though some fans were expecting Moriarty to be a recurring character throughout the BBC Sherlock series, and not actually be dead following ‘The Reichenbach Fall,’ the show’s creator says that the show needs new villains. However, did he actually die in the finale? A quote from Moffat’s interview with The Radio Times via Hypable:

STEPHEN MOFFAT: “Moriarty’s a one-shot deal in the original [books]. I don’t want [Sherlock] to turn into a show that’s about one villain and one hero,” said Moffat.“Moriarty was great because he was a surprise. Every time you bring him back he won’t be as big a surprise. We need to find new villains, we need to find new ideas, otherwise the show doesn’t keep growing. There are other great villains in [the Conan Doyle books] that we want to visit. We have to keep the show growing otherwise it won’t surprise you. Once you get the measure of it you’ll just get critical – if we keep surprising you and keeping you off balance you won’t.

Moriarty is just the perfect villain and I loved him on the show. Any of you fans of BBC Sherlock? Do you hope Moriarty comes back, or that he actually is dead?

As much as i completely adore moriarty, I do hope that he’s dead, or if he’s not, that he will not be an enemy if Sherlock’s. I agree with Moffat- bringing back the same person over and over (even someone as riveting and intersting as Moriarty) will only dimmen their presense. It’s those rare, completely captivating moments and people that are the most memorable. The regulars whose actions you can predict because they’re on so often are “ordinary” and “boring” as Moriarty would say. And I dont what anyone to become that- it makes the show less enjoyable. So, I do hope he’s dead. As for knowing if he is or not- that’s hard to know. Moffat is known to trick people :)

I have no idea if he’s dead. I certainly won’t believe he’s dead until it’s officially stated but I agree with Alexa it’s better not to just have the one main villain all the time otherwise as Moffat says the show doesn’t stay fresh, new villains means new challenges and interactions for our main characters and of course growth.

I love this show and waiting for series 3 is killing me.

I believe that the show will be so much less interesting to watch with out him. He was the one person I was always excited to see because he made the show just that more interesting. I love the concept of “the game” both Sherlock and Moriarty aren’t normal and they’d do anything to stay interested so with him gone the show just got a bit more boring. After all what’s the fun in playing with ordinary people. As well as I don’t think Sherlock would be satisfied to win the game and restore his name if Moriarty wasn’t there to see it.
Some new character are good but you can still have new one with Moriarty’s around. It would be vary interesting if Moriarty had compete with other criminal’s as well.

I love Moriarty as a character, and I think that there’s actually potential to leave his death ambiguous for a big return a good few episodes down the line, then kill him off, because that would certainly be a nice surprise :)

  • Maddie

I loved Moriarty but I hope he stays dead. If both Sherlock and Moriarty survive then #1 What was the point of the fall? and #2 I will lose a lot of respect for Moffat. I agree with the decision to move onto other villains.

.. if Moriarty died, why didn’t newspaper headline (“Fake Super Detective Dead”, etc) include this ‘news’ ?

(Moriarty’s death is not verbally acknowledged, either- for example, by Watson or Mrs Hudson–)

but I applaud Stephen Moffat’s promise to bring us, the rapt audience!, more villains. more surprises.

bring ‘em on! and BRAVO for the terrific storytelling-

I hope moriarty is alive and kicking. the best thing would be new villains and then in the last episode reveal that the new villains all work for moriarty, and then out pops Andrew Scott. that would be awesome. he is the best actor of a villain there has ever been or at least in a while. x

If he’s still alive, I’m hoping that he’ll at least show the brain damage appropriate to a freaking bullet to the head. Of course, that won’t make him much of a threat…still, it might be sort of interesting to have another villain using a mentally impaired Jim to lure Sherlock in, and then ‘BAM!’ Reveal themselves as being even more of a convoluted bastard/bitch than Jim was.

I find it hard to believe Moriarty is dead. How does he benefit by killing himself? How does he continue to make Sherlock suffer?

The show isn’t designed to be completely true to the original stories in every detail so I do think it’s possible for Moriarty to return.

I’m somewhat of a Holmes purist though so I naturally want our hero(es) to beat him.

The show is absolutely priceless. I have to say I was skeptical when I heard Sherlock was being modernized. Jeremy Brett is the iconic Holmes to me but I can’t get enough of this version.

Plllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaase, please please…. I realy want him to be returned!!!!!!!!!!!, He was the funniest criminal and I think the film without him would be a real dissapointment.

I think that this consultig criminal would hardly accept a replacement….

I aggre with mr. Moffat about needing new villains but I realy don’t think the people would use to a lot of new ones unless Moriarty himself control them all…

I adore this show. I have read all the actual Sherlock Holmes books, so I must say I kinda saw this coming. The whole sherlock “killing” himself and moriarty actually dying was in the books. So, I find it hard to see how Moriarty will come back, and then what would happen? But I do love Andrew Scott, and since he is a fantastic actor and I think has won a BAFTA, I look forward to seeing him in other stuff.

You should see the miniseries Blackout and The Town from BBC with Andrew Scott. He is really a great actor.
