Though we all knew that this was going to be the case, we now have confirmation from Warner Bros. that the extended edition of Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ is to be released on DVD in the later months of 2013. The timing of the DVD release for the first in the series is no coincidence also, with the next in the trilogy, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’, hitting theaters just a couple of months later, in December 2013.
Fans of the series will no doubt be thrilled that The Hobbit series has been granted extended edition status, however with the series already being extended from two films to three, the announcement poses the question of whether there is sufficient material to have extended editions when the series is already longer than first thought. Though filming will continue next year for the completion of the Hobbit trilogy, fans must surely be wondering if there is enough material in J.R.R. Tolkein’s world for there to warrant three films, as well as extended material. However, I’m sure most wont be complaining, as it promises more time spent in Middle Earth.
