This week, it was announced that there will be a third and fourth movie in the ‘The Amazing-Spider Man’ franchise, along with their release dates. Shailene Woodley, who plays Mary Jane, had already filmed her scenes for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ – but now it seems that along with the plans for the third and fourth film, they have decided to cut her scenes from the second film and wait until the third film to introduce her character. In her new interview with Entertainment Weekly for Divergent – she spoke out on how she feels about the decision to hold off introducing Mary Jane until ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3′:
EW learned that her storyline in the second movie is being bumped from the second film to the third.
“Of course I’m bummed,” she says in an email. “But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason…based on the proposed plot I completely understand the need for holding off introducing Mary Jane until the next film.”
Deadline posted this statement from director Marc Webb, where he explains his decision:
“I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship,” said director Marc Webb in a statement. “Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”
Seems like a pretty reasonable decision. Now that there’s another two movies ahead, they have more to work with – more time to draw out the storyline and not rush everything. It’s not like they’re completely cutting MJ out of the franchise – just waiting to introduce her character at a more suitable time, while building on the relationship between Gwen and Peter.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ is currently filming, directed by Marc Webb and starts Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx. The movie is due for release on May 2nd 2014.
