Author of the ‘Uglies’ series, Scott Westerfeld, reveals that movie is in the pipeline once again

July 3, 2013

Woah! This is very fantastic news. The process of bringing the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld to the big screen has been a very bumpy ride, and many people (including me) doubted if we’d ever see a film adaptation of the brilliant novels. Back in 2009 I actually was quite obsessed with these books, and I created a fansite for them called (which is now closed). Oh the nostalgia…and excitement!

Today we got some pretty thrilling news: we’re back in action for Uglies. Westerfeld just revealed on his Twitter account that he’ll be meeting with movie representatives in Los Angeles in 3 short weeks:

Back in 2011 we reported that the film had jumped back into pre-production, with Hydraulx Entertainment at the helm. However, the movie was still not made. Did you know that back then, when the film was first in major negotiations to get made, Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars actress Shailene Woodley had almost nabbed the lead role of Tally? She’s been on the rise for quite a while! That was before The Descendants!

Who do you think should play Tally Youngblood?

Kimmy is a 22 year old nerdfighter and artist who is the founder and editor-in-chief of Page to Premiere. When she's not writing about books and movies here or on her Hunger Games site called, she loves creating original content at her magazine and production company JØLVIE, manically Tumblr-ing, eating sushi, drinking Thai iced tea, and being lazy with her cat Rue! She hopes to be a published author one day. You can follow her on Twitter at @kimmymary.

Whoever plays Tally needs to be a new actress. All of the main characters need to be played by new actors. A familiar face might ruin the effect!

I absolutely love this girl as Tally. She’s an unknown actress from User Based Casting.

HOLY SHIT how did I not even know about a film being in pre-production!??! I got really into this series back in 2008. I loved it. I met Scott, and had some of the books autographed. He held a talk with fans, and he was asked about a movie. Back then, he said that he wasn’t really interested in it and that it wasn’t a possibility for the future. I guess that changed! I was about 18 at the time, and very disappointed lol. I’m 23 now, and I would still totally go see that movie if and when it comes out. I’m fangirling all over again right now! I need to re-read the whole series.

Emily Browning should would be perfect Tally!

For Tally I like: Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz. For Shay I really like Analeigh Tipton.

  • Zoey Marie

Jennifer lawrence would be a perfect tally to me!

I’d LOVE to see Taissa Farmiga as Tally, she’s just perfect!

I knew Analeigh in high school! I agree that she would be really good for the role, if not for the fact that it would be really hard to get her into Ugly form. Although the challenge of getting into character for Specials would be fantastic to see! She’s mainly only played ditsy/innocent characters, and I’d love to see her play Shay’s brooding character.

Uglies came out on February 8th, 2005! Wow! It’s been 9 years, and we still don’t have a movie yet! This book was probably the second dystopian book I read (The Giver being the first). I can’t wait when casting actually gets rolling. :D HOPEFULLY SOON.
