Meryl Streep, Cameron Monaghan, and Alexander Skarsgard join ‘The Giver’

Big news for Phillip Noyce’s upcoming film adaptation of The Giver by Lois Lowry! The Wrap is reporting that acting legend Meryl Streep is in talks to play the community’s Chief Elder, who maintains order in the seemingly utopian society. Cameron Monaghan, in the role of Asher, who is best friend to the lead character, Jonas. Alexander Skarsgard will play Jonas’ father. Monaghan is well known for being a part of the television show Shameless and the upcoming film adaptation of Vampire Academy, and Skarsgard for the show True Blood.

Jeff Bridges will play the title role of The Giver, and Jonas will be portrayed by Brenton Thwaites. Jonas is chosen to be the community’s Receiver of Memories, who spends his days being mentored by the Giver. The Giver teaches him to confront and understand the lies that inform society. The film is based on the best-selling and award-winning novel by Lois Lowry.
