Thousands of moviegoers came home last night after seeing the early Thursday night showings of Sony’s newest addition to the Spiderman franchise. I, myself, enjoyed another dose of Spidey in The Amazing Spiderman 2 with all the action, web shooters, and damsels in distress. The movie was satisfying, but I was curious to find out about a few characters not explained in the film, including why Mark Webb cut out Shailene Woodley’s performance as Mary Jane Watson. So I searched the internet, and asked my comic book obsessed brother to fill in the blanks where the movie left off. SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen the movie yet or have read the comics, I spoil the ending!
I am no comic book aficionado, but as I said above my twin brother is, so thanks Alex for the info. However, after stewing about the film I have come to my own conclusion that Mary Jane Watson may not actually be Peter Parker/Spiderman’s next romantic partner in the franchise. For those who know all about the comics, this will be knowledge you already know, but our main audience might be as clueless as I was. Right before Comic-Con last summer it was announced that Shailene Woodley’s debut as Mary Jane was cut from the film. Speculation arose, and insiders were saying producers were not happy with Woodley’s performance as Parker’s soon to be model/actress wife, or that the online backlash was enough to leave her on the cutting room floor. Yes, this may be true, but as an audience member I can see why her small scenes were cut – to focus on the sacred relationship of Peter and Gwen.
If you haven’t heard, Gwen Stacey dies a tragic death that leaves a huge hole in Peter’s life as his first love. Mark Webb (Director) explained in a recent interview with Movie Web why he needed to keep the focus on Peter and Gwen in the already overstuffed sequel.
“There was one little scene at the beginning where she is next door and it took place right around the montage where he comes back and there was another little moment between Gwen and MJ. But it just tipped over. The relationship between them [Peter and Gwen] is so sacred and so powerful, that it just didn’t feel right. And it sucks because Shailene is such a f**king great actress and so cool and magical but it was just about having this obligation to this romance that I thought was sacred. It was just one of those things.”
Later on, Webb was asked if Woodley would be asked back in the upcoming films, but feigned with the usual Divergent excuse of “tricky scheduling.” Notice how in his response he made sure to emphasize on Shai’s acting abilities? I think Sony got lucky with having to give excuses for their recast.
Casting may still be up in the air for the red head who lived next door to Peter Parker, but the studio seems to be set with Felicity Jones as Felicia Hardy a.k.a Black Cat. Yes, Spidey has yet another love interest before Mary Jane Watson.
The early 2000 adaptations with Toby Mcguire left out just a few key facts in Spiderman’s personal life, don’t you think?
Sitting in the dark theater last night, I saw Felicity Jones introduced as Felicia – the name rung a bell – her small role set off an alarm in my head which had me thinking, “she must have a bigger part in the upcoming movies!” Though it is not confirmed, Jones appearance as the suspicious Felicia had other bloggers speculating about her role as Black Cat as well.
In The Amazing Spiderman 3, things are going to be dark for Peter, Mary Jane will most likely be introduced (maybe as Harry Osbourne’s girlfriend? Not sure about that one), but Black Cat will be the one Spiderman falls for first. Just like in the comics, this is why Mark Webb and Sony are redoing the movies, to add in the details left out of the first trilogy.Think of Black Cat as DC’s Catwoman, though Black Cat came before DC’s version in the comics a good decade before. She’s a trained cat burglar who shows up mainly in the Spiderman comics. Her father is a world famous thief, and one night when trying to break him out of prison she meets Spiderman and builds an affection for him. She’s a bit of an anti-hero in the sense that she does all the wrong things to garner Spiderman’s love. Even going as far to put herself in harms way to help out Spiderman. She’s almost killed by Doctor Octopus when she steals a weapon that could destroy New York, but Spiderman saves her and this is the point when he starts to fall for Felicia.
The Black Cat and Spiderman have a long history, and with her role as Harry Osbourne’s assistant in the movie, the writers may change a bit of her background. She might end up as Harry’s girlfriend, who knows. I believe the third installment will be all about Black Cat, and then the final movie we will get to see Peter and Mary Jane together at last. There will be a bit of a love triangle, because in the comics Black Cat leaves for an extended period of time to come back and find that Peter married Mary Jane. Black Cat takes to physically threatening MJ to get Peter back. That will be one spicy cat fight onscreen! The possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to see it all play out onscreen in the next couple years.
