Finally! Marvel has revealed they are developing a stand-alone film for Black Widow, who is portrayed by Scarlet Johansson in The Avengers, Iron Man, and Captain America (along with her varying hair-styles).
According to Variety, Marvels Studio president Kevin Feige has long been a supporter of a possible Black Widow movie.
Now with the Marvel films entering a new phase that started with Iron Man 3, Black Widow’s long alluded, Soviet-spy centered past will finally come to light, starting with 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
KEVIN FEIGE: “When we meet the Avengers at the top of ‘Age of Ultron,’ it’s a very different landscape than we left them at the end of the first film.”
The sequel will then focus more on the characters coming back together after the disbandment of S.H.I.E.L.D. and figuring out where they know fit in a world where the heroes are the outlaws.
KEVIN FEIGE:“We learn more about [Black Widow's] past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that.”
As of now, there is no official release date for a Black Widow spin-off, and it’s unclear whether or not the film project would be part of Marvel’s current second-phase, or saved for the studio’s already planned third-phase, along with films like Ant Man, Avengers 3, and Captain America 3, all due within the next couple of years.
However, fans should rest happy knowing that everyone’s favorite former Soviet spy is finally getting her own kick-ass spin-off.
