Exclusive: Hank Green talks having a “doof” brother who is also the brilliant author of ‘The Fault in Our Stars’

At the premiere of The Fault in Our Stars, I had the awesome opportunity to talk with Hank Green all about his unique perspective of the phenomenon known as nerdfighteria. Hank is “TFIOS” author John Green’s brother, and has been creating videos online on their VlogBrothers channel (also known as Brotherhood 2.0) since January 1st, 2007. It was absolutely awesome to be able to chat with him, after having him on my computer screen weekly for such a long time!

This has been a long time coming for you, too, I mean you probably were the first person to read The Fault In Our Stars, or close to it?

HANK GREEN: One of the first, yes!

What has been your favorite part about seeing this phenomenon happen?

HANK: I had no idea what this red carpet thing was going to be like. There’s so much excitement, and so many people are connecting to it. Also, it’s just not the type of movie that’s supposed to have this type of response! So, that means a lot, I know it means a lot to John, and it means a lot to me. It also means a lot to everyone that worked on the movie. That’s the best part! Just seeing people love it.

What is that one thing about The Fault in Our Stars that really makes it mean so much to you?

HANK: When I first read it, I put it down…and for one, it’s just really hard to believe that my brother wrote it. You know, I mean I know that guy! He’s kind of a doof. Just to see this come out of…I mean it’s just hard to put those two people together! I mean usually when I read a book I think, “What a genius, was this person!” Then I’m like, I know John! He’s…John. When I finished reading it I remember thinking, “This is going to be a very big deal. It’s going to be a very big deal for John, and it’s going to be a very big deal for nerdfighteria.” From the moment I put it down. I mean, I didn’t know that this was going to happen, but I knew it was going to be a big deal.

If you were going to act in the movie, who would you want to play?

HANK: In this movie?!

HANK: Some very, very, small part! I am not good at acting!

Ha! Okay, so, we all know that The Fault in Our Stars is extremely quotable. What is your favorite quote? Also, oh! What is your favorite overall quote, ever?

HANK: Well, I can’t do that one!

Too many good quotes out there?

HANK: Yeah…but I think “Don’t forget to be awesome!” is my favorite quote of all time. Let’s just use that! Hmm, well I really like the Craigslist scene with the swing-set. I love the funny moments, where you humanize the situation. You admit that you’re a human, you admit that you can laugh about something. Yeah, “The vaguely pedophilic swing set…”

Of tears!

What is your favorite quote from The Fault in Our Stars movie?
