Fancasting Lara Jean, Josh, and Peter Kavinsky from ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’

With the recent news of Jenny Han’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before being picked up Overbrook Entertainment, there’s now definite excitement about the book becoming a movie. Over here on Page To Premiere, we never miss an opportunity to fancast upcoming adaptations, Hollywood will no doubt choose a brilliant cast, but until then let’s have a bit of fun.

My wish is to see a newbie take the reins of this film, they’re aren’t very many well known American Asian young ladies in Hollywood, so we’ve added on the two main guys from the book: Josh and Peter Kavinsky. The book centers around Laura Jean, her family, and some embarrassing letters she wrote. But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister’s ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after all.

Laura Jean is biracial, her mother was Korean and her father is American. The cover model is perfect representation of the character whom I based my picks of the actresses from. NOTE: I’ve only seen a few of these actresses in movies or TV shows, most of them were chosen based on age and looks.

#1 Arden Cho

Arden Cho is the most requested actress for the role based on her popularity of the hit TV show Teen Wolf. On the show, Arden plays a badass samurai sword wielding Firefox, but it’s her coy school girl side that plays very well into Lara Jean’s quirkiness. When I read To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Arden was my Laura Jean, but with Teen Wolf’s hectic filming schedule it’s gonna be hard to get Miss Cho for the role.

#2 Piper Curado

Piper curado1
Piper Curado is possibly the cutest young lady I’ve laid my eyes on. She’s a total Disney star appearing in shows such as I Didn’t Do It and A.N.T. Farm. Piper is 17 years old and like any Disney sweetheart she’s a fire cracker. The perfect age and the sweetest face, she’s a lovely choice for the role. But, if we don’t see her as Lara Jean, we’ll see her pop up on the big screen in no time.

#3 Kelsey Chow

A true biracial beauty, Kelsey Chow is part Chinese, English, and Cherokee. Not a perfect match to the description of the character, but if they cast Shay Mitchell (another popular casting) as Lara Jean’s older sister, Margot, you wouldn’t argue with the two actress’ physical similarities. Kelsey is best known for her stunt on One Tree Hill, and also for the girl who asks Peter Parker to take pictures of her boyfriends car in The Amazing Spiderman. She’s super cute and only 22 years old and would definitely add a different flare to the character.

#4 Jessika Van

Our audience will recognize Kelsey Chow from MTV’s Awkward, she’s a very gifted actress with a massive resume to show for it. Her stature and appearance resembles the cover model brilliantly, Jessika would be a lovely choice fore Lara Jean and also Margot.

#5 Chelsea T. Zhang

Chelsea T Zhang
Chelsea T. Zhang is a relatively unknown actress, I stumbled upon her while browsing the endless lists on IMDB.com. Fun fact, she had minute role in Perks of Being A Wallflower and will be in the upcoming independent adaptation of Me Earl and The Dying Girl (no idea that was becoming a movie). She’s definitely a girl I’d like to take the reigns on To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.

Described as an ordinary nerdy guy, a guy you’d expect to be good at computers and call comic books graphic novels. He has brown hair and green eyes that go muddy in the center.

#1 Callan McAuliffe

callan mcauliffe
Callan McAuliffe, or as I like to call him “Leo DiCaprio’s younger clone.” Some of you may remember him in The Great Gatsby, he played the unforgettable “Teen Jay Gatsby” which left audiences puzzling if he was the product of movie magic, or there really is an actor that looks very similar to Leo Dicaprio. Callan fits the character description very nicely, and he has the acting chops to boot with Kite and Flipped. Callan is my top pick for Josh!

#2 Ryan Guzman

Admittedly, Ryan is way more of a hunk than how Josh is described, but he’s got the boy next door vibe going on. Plus, he’s a total nice guy which is exactly how Josh is in the book. He’s known for a short stint on Pretty Little Liars, and he’s staring in the newest addition to the Step Up franchise.

#3 Adam Devine

Screen shot 2014-07-11 at 1.48.39 PM
Adam Devine is best known for his comedy work in such films as Pitch Perfect and Workaholics and recently in the NBC TV series Modern Family. It was his role in Modern Family that made me think of Adam, he was actually the person I pictured in the book. He’s a little on the shorter side, but his character on Modern Family is very similar to Josh in the books; a sweet guy. Though his other roles may be a little on the crude side, I’m sure he could easily tone it down.

Peter Kavinsky

Described with brown hair, there isn’t much else to go one besides what Laura Jean says about him. “He could be a dashing World War I soldier, handsome enough for a girl to wait years for him to come back from war, so hadsome she could wait forever. He could be wearing a red letterman’s jacket, driving around in a Corvette with the top down, one arm on the steering wheel, on his way to pick up his girl for the sock hop. Peter’s kind of wholesome good look feel more like yesterday than today. There’s just something about him girls like.”

#1 Robbie Amell

Screen shot 2014-07-11 at 5.54.29 PM
The sultry Robbie Amell came to mind especially with Jenny Han’s wholesome good look description. He has the brooding brow that the camera loves, and a definite essence from the 50s. Plus, Robbie is a great actor and one I’d like to see on the big screen. Robbie is best known for his recent run on the CW’s Tomorrow People, but will be joining the Marvel family soon on the new CW spin-off show The Flash.

#2 Greg Sulkin

Screen shot 2014-07-11 at 5.58.06 PM
Greg Sulkin has had a long career for his short life, he was first in the TV movie Doctor Zhivago, then Witches of Waverly Place, Pretty Little Liars, and recently the Delirium pilot. A little on the shorter side, but he has the look of a boy from yesterday instead of today. If Gregg doesn’t get cast in this adaptation, I’m sure we’ll see him pop up somewhere else!

#4 Luke Benward

Screen shot 2014-07-11 at 4.41.40 PM
Last but not least, Luke Benward is a definite competitor for Peter Kavinsky. His role in the independent war drama, We Were Soldiers puts his look in the right time period for the character. He’s played roles on the Disney Channel very similar to Peter, plus he’s super tall. Besides Robbie, I’d love to see Luke for the role.

Who would you choose as your dreamcast for the movie?

Natasha is an 20 year old born and raised California girl. She fills her free time fangirling over her favorite series and actors. She loves reading, making YouTube videos, and enjoys spending time with her family, lovable fat cat, and hyper husky! Check her out on her YouTube Channel - Tashapolis

I love Lara Jean and this book

  • hannah roberti

I think Arden would be a good choice for Lara Jean and Gregg I can definitely see as Peter. Some of these actors just seem a bit old to be playing sixteen year olds though, even Arden is like 28 or something (but then again Hollywood does this all the time). I would like if they got someone new and relatively unknown to play Lara Jean

  • Courtney

I agree some of the actors you chose seem to be a bit too old to be playing High School characters. A couple of them look like they could be 30 years old lol. I love your picks for Lara Jean though.

  • frumpus

All of those guys are too old and too buff, I would go for someone who’s actually 17-18, scrawny, with no abs, and lots of zits on their face. and i think they need someone pretty young to play lara jean since she acts like a 13 year old anyway (despite being 17)

  • frumpus

only problem is she doesn’t look mixed enough. i dont think she could pull it off even with makeup. i guess if they can’t find a mixed actress they’ll just make the dad asian too.

  • Allie

Yeah, they just might. They had to change Arden Cho’s character on Teen Wolf to from mixed to full asian (though it was mixed asian). Though since this is a book and a little more set, more people would know about it and be upset, but hopefully their love for Jenny Han will undermine that.

  • Anto

Ever since I read the book, I can only imagine Miles Teller playing the role of Peter Kavinsky. He’s funny and has that old school handsome look.

  • Alexandra S

lara jean says in the book that she and margo look more like their mom and kitty looks more like their dad. this actress would be just fine. do you honestly think someone can be “too asian”??

  • nj

check out tia hwang cuevas. i think she would be perfect as lara jean! since she’s half korean/american :)

  • Nicole

All of the girls can’t be Lara Jean, ’cause the look older, no, seriously, no one of them can play Lara Jean. And what about the guys? No, absolutely no! They look older, and I think, that the cast must include people, that are unknown. It will be more interesting.
