With the recent news of Jenny Han’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before being picked up Overbrook Entertainment, there’s now definite excitement about the book becoming a movie. Over here on Page To Premiere, we never miss an opportunity to fancast upcoming adaptations, Hollywood will no doubt choose a brilliant cast, but until then let’s have a bit of fun.
My wish is to see a newbie take the reins of this film, they’re aren’t very many well known American Asian young ladies in Hollywood, so we’ve added on the two main guys from the book: Josh and Peter Kavinsky. The book centers around Laura Jean, her family, and some embarrassing letters she wrote. But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister’s ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after all.
Laura Jean is biracial, her mother was Korean and her father is American. The cover model is perfect representation of the character whom I based my picks of the actresses from. NOTE: I’ve only seen a few of these actresses in movies or TV shows, most of them were chosen based on age and looks.
#1 Arden Cho
Arden Cho is the most requested actress for the role based on her popularity of the hit TV show Teen Wolf. On the show, Arden plays a badass samurai sword wielding Firefox, but it’s her coy school girl side that plays very well into Lara Jean’s quirkiness. When I read To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Arden was my Laura Jean, but with Teen Wolf’s hectic filming schedule it’s gonna be hard to get Miss Cho for the role.
#2 Piper Curado
Piper Curado is possibly the cutest young lady I’ve laid my eyes on. She’s a total Disney star appearing in shows such as I Didn’t Do It and A.N.T. Farm. Piper is 17 years old and like any Disney sweetheart she’s a fire cracker. The perfect age and the sweetest face, she’s a lovely choice for the role. But, if we don’t see her as Lara Jean, we’ll see her pop up on the big screen in no time.
#3 Kelsey Chow
A true biracial beauty, Kelsey Chow is part Chinese, English, and Cherokee. Not a perfect match to the description of the character, but if they cast Shay Mitchell (another popular casting) as Lara Jean’s older sister, Margot, you wouldn’t argue with the two actress’ physical similarities. Kelsey is best known for her stunt on One Tree Hill, and also for the girl who asks Peter Parker to take pictures of her boyfriends car in The Amazing Spiderman. She’s super cute and only 22 years old and would definitely add a different flare to the character.
#4 Jessika Van
Our audience will recognize Kelsey Chow from MTV’s Awkward, she’s a very gifted actress with a massive resume to show for it. Her stature and appearance resembles the cover model brilliantly, Jessika would be a lovely choice fore Lara Jean and also Margot.
#5 Chelsea T. Zhang
Chelsea T. Zhang is a relatively unknown actress, I stumbled upon her while browsing the endless lists on IMDB.com. Fun fact, she had minute role in Perks of Being A Wallflower and will be in the upcoming independent adaptation of Me Earl and The Dying Girl (no idea that was becoming a movie). She’s definitely a girl I’d like to take the reigns on To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.
Described as an ordinary nerdy guy, a guy you’d expect to be good at computers and call comic books graphic novels. He has brown hair and green eyes that go muddy in the center.
#1 Callan McAuliffe
Callan McAuliffe, or as I like to call him “Leo DiCaprio’s younger clone.” Some of you may remember him in The Great Gatsby, he played the unforgettable “Teen Jay Gatsby” which left audiences puzzling if he was the product of movie magic, or there really is an actor that looks very similar to Leo Dicaprio. Callan fits the character description very nicely, and he has the acting chops to boot with Kite and Flipped. Callan is my top pick for Josh!
#2 Ryan Guzman
Admittedly, Ryan is way more of a hunk than how Josh is described, but he’s got the boy next door vibe going on. Plus, he’s a total nice guy which is exactly how Josh is in the book. He’s known for a short stint on Pretty Little Liars, and he’s staring in the newest addition to the Step Up franchise.
#3 Adam Devine
Adam Devine is best known for his comedy work in such films as Pitch Perfect and Workaholics and recently in the NBC TV series Modern Family. It was his role in Modern Family that made me think of Adam, he was actually the person I pictured in the book. He’s a little on the shorter side, but his character on Modern Family is very similar to Josh in the books; a sweet guy. Though his other roles may be a little on the crude side, I’m sure he could easily tone it down.
Described with brown hair, there isn’t much else to go one besides what Laura Jean says about him. “He could be a dashing World War I soldier, handsome enough for a girl to wait years for him to come back from war, so hadsome she could wait forever. He could be wearing a red letterman’s jacket, driving around in a Corvette with the top down, one arm on the steering wheel, on his way to pick up his girl for the sock hop. Peter’s kind of wholesome good look feel more like yesterday than today. There’s just something about him girls like.”
#1 Robbie Amell
The sultry Robbie Amell came to mind especially with Jenny Han’s wholesome good look description. He has the brooding brow that the camera loves, and a definite essence from the 50s. Plus, Robbie is a great actor and one I’d like to see on the big screen. Robbie is best known for his recent run on the CW’s Tomorrow People, but will be joining the Marvel family soon on the new CW spin-off show The Flash.
#2 Greg Sulkin
Greg Sulkin has had a long career for his short life, he was first in the TV movie Doctor Zhivago, then Witches of Waverly Place, Pretty Little Liars, and recently the Delirium pilot. A little on the shorter side, but he has the look of a boy from yesterday instead of today. If Gregg doesn’t get cast in this adaptation, I’m sure we’ll see him pop up somewhere else!
#4 Luke Benward
Last but not least, Luke Benward is a definite competitor for Peter Kavinsky. His role in the independent war drama, We Were Soldiers puts his look in the right time period for the character. He’s played roles on the Disney Channel very similar to Peter, plus he’s super tall. Besides Robbie, I’d love to see Luke for the role.
