For fans of the massively popular book series, The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, it can sometimes be hard to navigate the crowded book waters to quench your need to fill the void the Shadohunters left behind. Cassandra Clare, being the wonder woman that she is, already has three more book series from the Shadowhunter Chronicles in the works with The Dark Artifices debuting Spring 2015. But until then, readers who love adventure, fantasy, romance, and an addicting story will love these five book series below.
#1 The Whispers of The Fallen series by J.D. Netto
With mythology derived from The Book of Enoch, and an exciting adventurous tale paralleling The Lord of The Rings, fans of ALL AGES will find this book series enthralling and engaging. It follows a male protagonist, Isaac, who goes on a dangerous journey to protect Lucifer’s diary from Lucifer himself, with others joining his cause. It’s a story of redemption and sacrifice in a world where Nephilin, Fallen Stars (Fallen Angels), dragons, and creatures known as Shadows (very much like zombies) fill this fantastical world.
I personally love this story for it’s writing style and how different it is from my regular reads, but still having qualities I enjoy. Lots of action, an intricate world, and likable characters. J.D.Netto has one more highly anticipated book in this series to come. Will you be joining the world of Elysium soon?
#2 Penryn and the End of Days Series by Susan Ee (Angelfall)
Not having read this series yet (the books are sitting on my shelves waiting to be picked up), I’m going off the stellar reviews of my close friends on BookTube. It’s a dark post-apocalyptic tale with evil angels, murder, snark, and passion. Angels and comedy, what more do readers of The Mortal Instruments want? The first book in the series isn’t even 300 pages, and yet there’s enough action and plot to leave people obsessed.
I’m so pumped to get into this series, and I think our readers will love these books.
SYNOPSIS: It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back. Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel. Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.
#3 The Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout (Obsidian)
The Lux series has grown much in popularity over the last year with cover changes and the last book debuting this month, people are finally finding out about this romantic alien tale. Set in the modern world, the Lux series is a fun and sarcastic read with plenty of steamy romances, and devilishly handsome alien men for drooling purposes. It’s not just all fluff and games though, run-ins with the evil alien Arum, mysteries to solve, and the U.S. government experimenting on the Lux aliens. This series has just the right amount of action, and one of the most relatable female protagonist, Katy Shwartz, who is a book vlogger and blogger (she’s basically me but with a hot alien boyfriend).
The first book, Obisidian, in the five book series is all about Katy adjusting to her new town in West Virginia where she thought nothing interesting was ever going to to happen, until she set eyes on her arrogant neighbor, Daemon. From then on she is thrown into life threatening situations while still trying to maintain her normalality. I’m warning you to block out a good chunk of your time before you start this series, because it will suck you in!
#4 Unearthly Trilogy by Cynthia Hand
A book series that I have been wanting to read for quite some time, and I hope by this recommendation some of you will before me. This trilogy has many similarities to the Shadowhunter world, first that our female protagonist is part angel. Unlike the paranormal romance books following Twilight’s success, Unearthly has been one of the few to stand out for it’s enticing storyline. Many haven’t heard of the serie, which was published in 2011, so don’t miss out on the passionate romance and thrilling tale now!
SYNOPSIS: When Clara Gardner learns she’s part angel, her entire life changes. She now has a purpose, a specific task she was put on this earth to accomplish, except she doesn’t know what it is. Her visions of a raging forest fire and a mysterious boy lead her to a new high school in a new town but provide no clear instruction. As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she’d have to make–between the boy in her vision and the boy in her life, between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. . . . When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
#5 Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon
Whoa, what the heck is this book doing here? For our younger readers you probably wouldn’t appreciate this book until about the age of seventeen, but for those mature readers who love the historical fiction aspect of The Infernal Devices, then this book series is what you’ve been waiting for. Romance, mystery, fantasy, history… it’s all here wrapped up in an eight book saga. The Starz adapted television show just premiered, reigning in new audiences, just like me, who are swept up in Clare Randall’s exciting journey as she falls through time back to 18th century Scotland.
The ultimate book boyfriend lives within the pages of Outlander. Don’t miss out on men in kilts and the ultimate adventure readers have been enjoying for over 20 years. Read it and thank me later!
